Today Anthropic announced that Claude Design is going into beta on every paid plan. I tried it straight away, and honestly it works great. Until now my design work lived in one tool and my code in another, and I glued the two together by hand. That friction showed up every single time. That gap is a lot shorter now.
The announcement names four things. Claude Design stays on brand with your design system, across projects. You edit directly on the canvas. It syncs with Claude Code. And it connects to more of the tools you already use.
What I noticed in the test
I work with several design systems, and the real test for me was whether it handled them without a fuss. It does. I am making more with it now: content, presentations, posters. Things I used to jump to another program for, I can keep in the same flow. I have simply started designing more because the threshold is gone.
But the part that truly matters to me is the sync with Claude Code. I build this site with Claude Code, and the step from design to working component was always a lossy translation. A mockup is a picture; code is the truth. Now I send a design over smoothly and Claude Code picks it up. That removes the dullest half of the job.
Editing on the canvas sounds minor and is not. The gap between “describe what you want and wait” and “grab the element and drag it into place” is the gap between dictating and steering. The second one feels like a tool.
The reservation I am keeping
Staying on brand across projects is exactly where I pause. It is convenient, and at the same time it hands one system the say over how my work looks. My design systems, my code, and my tools all meet inside one environment from one vendor. That is comfortable right up to the moment you want to leave.
This is the same dependency question that sits under almost every AI choice. Not whether it works, because here it clearly does, but what it costs you in control once you settle all the way in. I am genuinely enthusiastic and I am using it a lot. That is precisely why I keep watching for the point where convenience turns into lock-in.
Early verdict
For me this is one of the nicer updates in a while. Designing and coding are creeping closer together, and that saves a lot of back and forth. I will put it to work on real projects over the coming weeks and write down honestly where it holds up and where it strains.
